In the community

McGill University’s commitment to serving our communities, whether in neighbouring quartiers or on the other side of the planet, has roots older than the university itself. Our founder, James McGill, was an active citizen in his adopted home of Quebec, serving for many years as an elected member of the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada and driving grassroots initiatives such as a volunteer fire brigade. It’s that dedication, as much as his belief in the power of education, that is his living legacy.

McGill is known worldwide for its teaching and scholarship, so making our planet a better place starts, naturally enough, with educational outreach. We’re committed to putting our learning, ingenuity and creativity to work in other ways, too. We invite you to explore McGill’s "In the Community" website and discover some of the ways we’re working in our community – whether it’s providing free dental care to needy Montrealers or building AIDS awareness half a world away—as well as the many educational (and dare we say entertaining?) public activities offered right here at McGill and shared with the world through our Podcasts site and? iTunes U.

Want more? McGill’s new multimedia offerings bring you into a fascinating world of profiles, talks, performances and more. Our YouTube channel is home to interviews, profiles and news stories. The Canal Savoir television station broadcasts McGill’s Mini lecture series, high-profile symposia and other educational content. (Find Canal Savoir’s station number in your area.)?

McGill students, faculty and staff are members of these Montreal communities and strive to serve the needs of the people within them. At the same time, students receive meaningful volunteering and leadership opportunities and professors gain valuable information to further their research. There is a natural symbiosis between McGill University and Montreal’s quartiers that we will continue to nurture.

McGill in the CommunityEvery season, the student-run Edible Campus project produces hundreds of kilograms of fresh vegetables, most of which go directly to Santropol Roulant to be delivered in weekly care packages to isolated and vulnerable members of the Montreal community.
