Who we are

CaPS staff are the Career Education Professionals on campus.

As McGill’s central career service, we assist students from all faculties, schools and departments at all levels from undergraduates to postdocs. Continuing Studies students, as well as recent alumni are also eligible to opt in to our services. CaPS is distinctive among McGill services in that we support student success both throughout their time at McGill and during the critical graduation transition to work/further education.

We collaborate with faculty, staff & units across campus, and have ongoing partnerships with employers and community organizations. Our highly trained and experienced staff are actively involved in a wide variety of provincial, national and international professional associations, regularly presenting at conferences and events.

Why we are here

Career planning and preparedness is a major aspect of student development, and a primary motivator for attending university. In the Canadian University Survey Consortium’s First Year University Survey (2013) 86% of students cited “Get[ting] a good job” as a motivation to attend university, the highest percentage of any option.

At CaPS, our mission is to inspire McGill students in the exploration of their career options and to increase their employability through the development of lifelong career management skills.

As such, we contribute our expertise to the McGill Commitment by providing individual career advising/counselling, workshops, programs, events and resources that will help students to:

  1. Identify personal goals through self-assessment that includes reflection on their personality, interests, values, and skills.
  2. Expand awareness of future possibilities through educational events and resources.
  3. Select appropriate professional development and experiential learning opportunities that will complement their academic accomplishments and prepare them for success.
  4. Reflect on their experiences and training throughout their degree, in order to a) further self-awareness and refine goals, and b) learn how to communicate their skills, motivation, and fit to employers in their desired field.
